Many people do not realize that this plant is actually named after the scientist who discovered it (Dr. Ying Doon Moy). The name Moy Grande is a play on the Spanish phrase "muy grande," which means "very large." Living up to its name, this plant's flowers can be as large as dinner plates. The Texas Superstars aggie-horticulture website says Moy Grande may be "the largest flowering hibiscus on Earth." Flowers each last for a day, but they can be cut after they are fully open in the morning and refrigerated. This way, you can preserve the blooms and use them as cut flowers. Using this method, the flowers will actually remain open for several hours.
